Our 75th Year!

Camp Zion Celebrated a BIG anniversary in 2021, 75 years in Door County!

Most of us have never known a time when Camp Zion didn’t exist. We don’t always appreciate how blessed we are to be standing on the shoulders of some truly visionary leaders including Paul “Pete” Peters, Steve LaBelle, Frank Scaccia, Michael J. Mintern, to mention a few. They realized the value of getting kids and adults out of their normal routine away from distractions, spending time God’s beautiful creation, learning new skills and activities, and giving them the opportunity to learn about Christ’s love for them, and plan of salvation.

In 1946, there were only a handful of camps scattered across the country (and some of those had been around since the 19th Century!). The Camp Zion leaders had been dreaming of owning their own camp since the late 1930s, when they took kids on camping trips to various locations in Wisconsin. They were about to embark on an adventure that would forever change the lives of thousands of people, and the ministry of what is now known as Christ Community Church of Zion.

In 1946, arrangements were being made for the youth of CCC to camp out on the “Beard Farm” a little less than a mile south of our current location. In exchange for picking his cherries, Mr. Beard allowed the group to camp out there, and “Zion Camp” was born!

We are planning anniversary celebrations throughout the year, including a special time on SATURDAY, JULY 3 after the Pancake Breakfast and Open House.

We’ve created a VINTAGE PHOTO GALLERY on this website that will include photos from the early foundational years and beyond. Pictures from the old days are not plentiful, and we would welcome pictures you might have from the early days of Camp Zion, in the range of 1946-1966. If you have any we could scan in, we would be grateful! New pictures are being added as they become available to us.

For over 77 years, the ministry of Camp Zion has touched many thousands of lives with the reality of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are grateful for the chance to continue in the footsteps of our visionary founders, and contribute to Christ’s Kingdom through the ministry of camp.
